Birthplace: College Springs, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa William Charles Nelson, age 80, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly Richmond, Virginia passed away Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Accura Healthcare in Stanton, Iowa. William was born July 5, 1936 in College Springs, Iowa the son of Paul and Monterey (Hickman) Nelson. He was raised in Clearmont, Missouri until the age of 12 when the family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Bill graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1954. He moved to Virginia in 1955 where he worked for the RFP Railroad. Bill later received a Bachelor's degree in 1970 and a Masters Degree in 1972 from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and was awarded the Student Of The Year Award. He worked many years for the State of Virginia Department of Rehabilitation as Administrator of the GED Program. After retirement Bill moved to Red Oak, Iowa to be near his family. Bill enjoyed music, playing the piano, tending to his flowers and yard, and reading. He served on the board of the Literacy Council in Virginia for many years and received the Governor's Volunteer Award for his fundraising efforts. Bill was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Richmond. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers: Ronald and Robert. Survivors include his sisters: Jeanette Lawson of Red Oak and Dee Anna Haack of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law: Sharon Nelson of Lamar, MO; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 1:30 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017 at the Tabor Lutheran Church at Wallin with visitation with the family to follow the service. Burial will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Memorials are suggested to the SPCA of Richmond, Virginia, the Parkinson Foundation, or the Montgomery County Animal Rescue. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
