Birthplace: Pollock, SD Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Walter Schaffer, age 82, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Walt was born October 2, 1931 in Pollock, SD the son of Fred and Christine (Stadel) Schaffer. As a young man, Walt worked as a mechanic and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Sharlene Fischer and four daughters were born to this union. He worked for Nachurs for many years living in South Dakota and Oklahoma before moving to Red Oak, Iowa in the mid 1980's. He worked for Agri Gains B&B for many years, managed the Red Oak Elks Lodge, and worked for White House Lawns. Walt was united in marriage to Linda Zastrow on June 3, 1977. He was a longtime active member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge being named Elk of The Year 2009-2010. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Linda Schaffer; brothers: Herbert and Gus; and sisters: Helen and Maggie. Survivors include his daughters: Sherri Field and husband Dr. David of Bismarck, ND; Susan Dailey and husband Mike of Arroyo Grande, CA; Valerie Schaffer of Durham, NC; and Elisabeth Sidoli and husband Geoffrey of Asheville, NC; 8 grandchildren; step-children: Scott Olson and wife Patti of Fredericksburg, VA and Karla Hunsaker and husband Jeff of Caw City, OK; 7 step-grandchildren; sister: Violet Berndt and husband Lauren of Herreid, SD; and many other relatives and friends. There will be no services at this time. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Columbia, SD. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
