Birthplace: Stanton, Iowa Resided In: Elliott, Iowa Willis Dean "Poppers" Schantz was born February 28, 1924 in Stanton, Iowa, the son of Sherman Alfred and Helen (Buffington) Schantz. He passed away on Monday afternoon, July 21, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Villisca, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 23 days. Dean grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1943. Following high school he served in the United States Army during WW II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. On January 6, 1944 he was united in marriage to Audrey M. McClelland in Leavenworth, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children, Kathryn, Robert and Thomas. Dean worked for Union Carbide plant for a short time before operating Schantz Grocery from 1957 until 1972 in Elliott. He then operated Schantz Trenching from 1973 until 1986. From 1986 until his retirement in 1999 he worked for Montgomery County Conservation at Hacklebarney Park near Villisca. He was a member of the Elliott Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. He was on the Elliott City Council from 1960 until 1972. Dean was also a member of the Griswold American Legion. He loved fishing. For 37 years he would travel to Rockport, Texas and catch Redfish. Dean also enjoyed gardening with his good friend Pete Ross. His true love was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. "Poppers hooks will forever be baited by angel fishermen." He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; and his sister, Darlene Nemrod. Survivors include his children, Kathryn LeBlanc and her husband Richard of Hutto, Texas, Robert Schantz and his wife Linda of Rockport, Texas, Thomas Schantz of Carter Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends.
