Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Abilene, Texas Wendell "Gene" Jones, age 69, of Abilene, Texas passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at the Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Gene was born July 19, 1944 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of Hayden and Anna Maye (Harville) Jones. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1962 and attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri before he entered the United States Air Force. While in Texas, during his time of service, Gene was united in marriage to Cindy Cross on March 25, 1967 in Olton, Texas. Upon his discharge he returned to Maryville where he earned a degree in business. Gene was a contractor for many years working with the Army Corp of Engineers and was the chief contractor for the Missouri Valley Division. He spent many years in Bellevue, Nebraska and when he retired moved to Abilene, Texas. Over the years Gene loved to play baseball and was an avid Yankees fan. He was a master gardener, a handyman, carpenter, and loved playing golf. Gene was raised in the Wales Presbyterian Church but during his married life was a Baptist serving as Deacon and Sunday School teacher. Gene's greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren. He truly loved children. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers: John and Leland Jones. Survivors include his wife: Cindy Jones of Abilene, Texas; daughter: Jill Chadwell and husband Robert of Abilene; son: Todd Jones and wife Rachel of Boulder, CO; grandchildren: TJ Jones of Boulder and Cole and Paige Chadwell of Abilene; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Wales Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Gomer Cemetery at Wales. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Gomer Cemetery at Wales, Iowa. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel, Red Oak, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
