Birthplace: Albert Lea. MN Resided In: Stanton formerly Rake, IA Vivian H. Nelson, age 90, of Stanton, Iowa formerly of Rake, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at the Stanton Care Center. Vivian Harriett Nelson was born October 7, 1916 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Rose (Gaard) Quame. At the age of two she moved with her family to Frost, Minnesota where her father was employed as a tinsmith for the Gullord Hardware Store. In 1927, the family moved to Rake, Iowa where Henry owned and operated the Quame Hardware Store. The family lived above the hardware store on main street. Vivian graduated from Rake High School with the class of 1934. She helped organize the High School Band and played the cornet. She and a friend wrote the lyrics to the Rake school song. She also enjoyed playing basketball. On June 11, 1939 she was united in marriage to Trygve O. Haugen of rural Rake, Iowa in a ceremony at the Liberty Lutheran Church. They lived in Rake and had two children. Tryg passed away on March 11, 1968. Vivian was united in marriage to Birney Nelson of rural Rake, Iowa on January 8, 1972. They called Rake their home, but spent the winters in St. Petersburg, Florida and the summers at Lake Okoboji. Birney passed away January 16, 2000. Vivian then moved to the Westminster Shores Retirement Center in St. Petersburg until moving to the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa in 2002. After graduating from high school, Vivian was employed at the Rake Post Office for 38 years as a clerk and substituted as Postmaster at times. During this time she also was a news reporter serving as resident editor of the Rake Register and correspondent for the Mason City Globe Gazette and Forest City Summit as well as the local sports reporter for the Des Moines Register. Vivian started writing the news when she was 15 years old. She loved sales and won several sales contests selling subscriptions to the Forest City Summit. She later was a top regional salesperson for Avon for several years. Vivian was a people person and liked dancing, swimming, bridge, and many other games. Many hours were spent on the dock at Lake Okoboji playing zilch with family and friends. She also loved traveling and had been to most of the states including Hawaii and Alaska as well as several countries in Asia and most of Europe. Sewing and knitting were other hobbies she enjoyed. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; brothers: LeRoy Quame and Orlando "Lindy" Quame, as well as her dear friend: Clarine Lund. Survivors include her children: Barbara Reisinger and husband Gordon of Red Oak, Iowa; and Roger Haugen and wife Gisela of St. Petersburg, Florida; grandchildren: Kathy Walker and husband John of Red Oak, Iowa; Todd Reisinger of Red Oak, Iowa; Kristin Gilchrist and husband Cory of Evergreen Colorado; Christie Pena and husband Cesar of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Elizabeth Polley and husband Jim of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Robert Jones of Jacksonville, Florida; 12 great grandchildren; brother: Robert Quame of Rake, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 1 PM Saturday, December 30, 2006 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the West Cemetery at Rake, Iowa. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
