Birthplace: Rural Macedonia, IA Resided In: Stanton, IA formerly Emerson Vivian M. Hicks, age 94, of Stanton, Iowa formerly of Emerson, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Stanton Care Center. Vivian M. Hicks was born August 30, 1918 near Macedonia, Iowa the daughter of Lester Lorenzo and Matilda Katherine (Kruse) DeBolt. She graduated from the Wales Lincoln High School in 1936 and was united in marriage to Robert Hicks on July 4, 1936 in Rockport, Missouri. Vivian was a long time farm housewife in the Emerson area and also a wonderful cook working for the Nishna Valley School for many years as the head cook. While living on the farm she was a long time member of the Oaks Community Church and when she moved into Emerson became a member of the Emerson Methodist Church where she was also involved in the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Emerson Community Club and the Jolly Janes. Vivian loved music, dancing, and singing. She sang for many church activities. Vivian was also an avid sports fan and particularly loved and followed the Kansas City Royals, the Creighton Blue Jays basketball team, and local teams that her children and grandchildren were a part of. She also loved annual fishing trips to Minnesota. One year, Vivian was honored as the Grand Marshall of the Emerson Fall Festival parade for her school and community service. Vivian will always be remembered by her family and friends for her wisdom, strength, and love. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; Robert Hicks on November 6, 1994; 7 brothers: Roy DeBolt and wife Juanita; Marion DeBolt and wife Edith; Lester DeBolt; Earl DeBolt; Merle DeBolt; Dale DeBolt and wife Renee; and Herb DeBolt; 2 sisters: Vera Viner and husband Ralph and Viola McVay and husband Bea; and her grandson: Chad Hicks. Survivors include her daughter: Joanne Olson and husband Ralph of Red Oak, IA and Ralph's family; sons: Bob Hicks and wife Mary of Emerson, IA and Don Hicks and wife Linda of Stanton, IA; grandchildren: Terry Westerlund and wife Amy of Red Oak, IA; Tammy Magneson and husband Jeff of Stanton, IA; Sean Hicks of Emerson, IA; Erin Junge and husband Adam of Omaha, NE; Lynn Hicks and wife Beth of Des Moines, IA; and Lesli Hill and husband Heath of Ames, IA; great grandchildren: Seth Esaias; Noah Westerlund; Heather Downing; Dayne Magneson; Caiden Hill; Olivia Hicks; Elena Hicks; and Chloe Junge; brother: Bob DeBolt and wife Marjorie of Charles City, IA; sisters-in-law: Merna DeBolt of Carson, WA; Evelyn DeBolt of Red Oak, IA; and Lorraine DeBolt of Clarinda, IA; brother-in-law: James Hicks and wife Caroline of Omaha, NE; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Emerson United Methodist Church with Pastor Denise Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson United Methodist Church or the Oaks Community Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
