Birthplace: Page County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Veva Gustafson, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, May 5, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Care Center. Veva Crain McCorkle Gustafson was born July 10, 1915 in Page County, Iowa near Braddyville, Iowa the second of three daughters of Roy and Bessie (Crain) McCorkle. When Veva was about 1 ½ years old, the family moved to the Crain Family farm just south of Hepburn, Iowa. She attended Hepburn elementary school and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1932. Veva attended Clarinda Junior College after which she taught in rural schools in Page County for four and a half years. On November 27, 1936 Veva eloped with Raymond Gustafson and they were married in Fremont, Nebraska. The couple lived in College Springs and later moved to Clarinda where both Ray and Veva worked at the Clarinda State Hospital. During this period of time, Ray was stricken with Polio at the age of twenty five. And overnight, Veva became the wife of an invalid not expected to live, Mother to a baby and a toddler, and sole support of the family financially and emotionally. In 1944 the family moved to Red Oak. Veva worked at the USDA/ASCS office for about 12 years, then transferred to Houghton State Bank. She was affiliated with the bank for 24 years. She also worked at the Learning Resource Center and the Montgomery County Auditor's Office. Veva held may positions in the Red Oak Presbyterian Church including Trustee, Session member twice, Church Treasurer for 4 years, PNC Committee, Chairman and Secretary of Dorcus circle, delivered tapes for the church for several years, and served as Church Liturgist many times. Veva was also a member of the Red Oak Chapter of the Business and Professional Women and honorary member of Rotary International. Veva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 63 years: Raymond Gustafson on November 7, 1998; son: Mike Gustafson on September 7, 1964; and sisters: Maxine Uhlich and Mary Swanson. Survivors include her daughters: Connie Kinser and husband Jim of Winterset, Iowa; Bette Larson and husband Axel of Red Oak, Iowa; Viki Heuton of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; and Mary Younggren Longman of Orinda, CA who made her home with the Gustafsons for many years; grandchildren: Darce Ovel and husband Jeff of Chatfield, MN; Joel Kinser of Des Moines, IA; Bill Kinser and wife Julie of Des Moines, IA; Molly Douglas and husband Chris of Des Moines, IA; Andy Larson of Stanton, IA; Lynn Frost and husband Greg of Platte City, MO; Amy Larson of Lincoln, NE; Susan Fuhrman and husband Ken of Bronson, KS; Sandra Mercer and husband Rex of Columbus, KS; Britta Hansen and husband Rob of Des Moines, IA; Kale Heuton and wife Shelly of Altoona, IA; and Cole Heuton of Pleasant Hill, IA; 17 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the Red Oak, Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dee Jay Reiff officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
