Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa formerly Elliott, Iowa Vernita Lorea Adams, age 94, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Elliott, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Vernita was born November 19, 1921 in Montgomery County, Iowa the daughter of Ralph Wallace and Ruth Engberg (Westerlund) DeVoss. She gradauted from Villisca High School in 1938 and moved to Minneapolis where she did secretarial work. She eventually moved back to Iowa and was united in marriage to Lynn Adams on August 9, 1941 in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in Omaha. After Lynn served in the Army, they moved to the Pilot Grove area where they farmed for many years. Vernita started a long career with Swanson and Boeye Law Firm retiring after 40 years from Swanson Law Firm. She and Lynn moved into Elliott, Iowa in 1976. They were long time members of the Pilot Grove United Methodist Church where Vernita was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the YMCA. Vernita was the Resident Representative on the Regency Board of Directors where she lived when she moved to Red Oak in 2003. For the past year and a half she had been a resident at Arlington Place. Over the years, Vernita enjoyed embroidery, gardening, canning, cooking, baking bread and cinnamon rolls, and was always very energetic. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Lynn Adams on October 4, 1998; and brothers: Vyrle, George, and Dean DeVoss. Survivors include her children: Sharon Hudson and husband Jim of Jacksonville, NC; Patricia Schultze and husband Burton of West Chicago, IL; and Ronald Adams and wife Barb of Elliott, IA; grandchildren: Randy Tomsic and wife Cammie of Wilmington, NC; Tami Rivenbark and husband Frankie of Jacksonville, NC; Amy Steenson and husband Todd of Batavia, IL; Dustin Schultze and wife Amy Kaye of Wasco, IL; Melissa Deist and husband Richard of Audubon, IA; and Brandon Adams and wife Misty of Elliott, IA; great grandchildren: Matthew Tomsic and wife Patee; Michael Tomsic; Courtney and Natalie Rivenbark; Lillyan, Jaxon, Elijah, and Layla Schultze; Daylan Kleen; Macy Vanderhoof; Abbi and Brooklyn Adams; and Shelby and Jenna Pelzer; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Terry McClain officiating. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Volunteer Fire Department or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and may be left at the funeral home. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
