Birthplace: Omaha, NE Resided In: Omaha, NE Vera Scanlan Kusleika, age 94, of Omaha, Nebraska passed away Friday May 4, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak, Iowa. Vera is the mother of Charla Schmid and grandmother of Dr. Kimberly Truka of Red Oak. She was born December 5, 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska the daughter of Bart and Ethel (Woolheater) Scanlan. She was raised in Omaha and was united in marriage to Charles "Charlie" Kusleika on September 4, 1942 at Holy Angels Catholic Church. They raised their four children and ran their family owned pharmacy in Omaha for many years. When Charlie became ill, Vera became his caretaker and also spent time helping to raise her grandchildren. She volunteered at the school helping children of all ages to read. Vera also worked for a local funeral home in her later years. Five years ago, Vera moved to Red Oak, Iowa where she was a resident of the Good Samaritan Society. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Charles Kusleika; sisters: Lucille Emmett and Margaret Bosco Leary; and brother: Ray Scanlan. Survivors include her children: Tom (Carol) Kusleika; Richard (Debbie) Kusleika; Charla (Tim) Schmid; and Mary Helen (Larry) Dembowski; grandchildren: Dr. Kimberly (Chuck) Truka; John (Lynn) Kusleika; Dick (Nancy) Kusleika; Dant Kusleika; Emily Schmid; and Katie (Justin) O'Neal; great grandchildren: Charlie and Matthew Truka; Andrew Kusleika; and Analise, Brenna, and Cade Kusleika; sister: Mary Alice Wardian; brother: Bernard (Donna) Scanlan; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Omaha. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Tueday, May 8, 2018 with a prayer service and recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM at Heafey Heafey Hoffman Dworak and Cutler Funeral Home on West Center Road in Omaha. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak and Heafey Heafey Hoffman Dworak and Cutler Funeral Home of Omaha in charge of arrangements.
