Obituary

Birthplace: Kellerton, Iowa Resided In: Norwalk, Iowa Vera C. Gillen, age 96, of Norwalk, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Norwalk Nursing and Rehab Center. Vera Cathaleen Gillen was born November 7, 1914 near Kellerton, Iowa the daughter of Alva and Ethie (Davis) Hartley. She was raised in Mills County, Iowa and was united in marriage to Elton Gillen on March 4, 1934. They lived in Mills County until the war when Elton served in the military in Missouri. They later lived in Allerton, Iowa before moving to Des Moines where they lived for 25 years. Vera was a Nurses Aid for ten years during that time. They retired and moved to Mena, Arkansas. Vera was later united in marriage to Everett "Wayne" Taylor. Vera and Wayne lived in Southwest City, Missouri and later Jay, Oklahoma before Vera moved to Norwalk, Iowa in 2008. Vera was a fifty year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, enjoyed gardening, collecting stamps, butterflies, and pocket watches and loved buying second hand clothes. Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her sons: Randall, Larry, and Elton; sisters: Ila and Gladys; and brothers: Donald and Alva. Survivors include her son: Gary Gillen of Des Moines, Iowa; grandson: Craig Gillen and wife Roxi of Norwalk, Iowa; granddaughter: Diane Huffman and husband Michael of New Sharon, Iowa; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in the Hastings, Iowa Cemetery. There will be visitation with the family one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
