Bettendorf, IA formerly Emerson Velva Achenbaugh, age 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa formerly of Emerson, Iowa passed away Friday, September 30, 2005 at the Bickford Cottage Assisted Living in Davenport, Iowa. Velva M. Achenbaugh was born November 27, 1917 in Scott County, Illinois the daughter of John and Anna (Rankin) Guenther. She lived in several different places in Illinois and Iowa before moving to Winterset, Iowa where she graduated from High School. After school, Velva took a job in Glenwood, Iowa at the State School. While in Glenwood, she met Darrell Achenbaugh. They were united in marriage April 6, 1940 in Holton, Kansas. They lived in Henderson and Macedonia where they farmed for many years. Darrell and Velva moved into Emerson when their son moved onto the farm. Darrell preceded Velva in death on March 29, 1978. For the past several years Velva has lived close to her son Dennis, most recently in Bettendorf, Iowa. Velva loved her family and took great pleasure in going fishing especially her trips to Lake Winnibigosh in Minnesota.
Velva was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Darrell Achenbaugh; son: Darry Achenbaugh; granddaughter: Jill Jirak; great grandson: Kane Jirak; and grandson: Brian Achenbaugh. Survivors include her son: Dennis Achenbaugh and wife Teresa of Bettendorf, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Mary Homfeld and husband Lester of Higginsville, Missouri; grandchildren: Cory Achenbaugh and wife Tara of Macedonia, Iowa; Whitney, Breanna, and Scott Achenbaugh all of Bettendorf, Iowa; Christopher VanBesien of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Nicole VanBesien of Wichita Falls, Texas; grandson-in-law: Mark Jirak of Shell Rock, Iowa; great grandchildren: Taylor Jirak of Shell Rock, Iowa; and Chelsea Stone of Wichita Falls, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, October 8, 2005 at the Emerson United Methodist Church in Emerson, Iowa with Pastor Pam Flanigan officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 1-2 PM prior to the funeral service on Saturday at the Emerson United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson United Methodist Church or the Emerson Public Library.
