Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa and Villisca, Iowa VELMA JEAN (BETTS) BRADLEY MEANS Velma was the second child of six to be born to Paul and Blanche (Scherer) Betts on January 18, 1926 in Sherman Township, Montgomery County, Iowa. She was raised in Red Oak and attended school there. As a young adult she was a waitress in Omaha, Nebraska. She married Howard Rolland Bradley on August 21, 1948 in Red Oak. Through the years they farmed in the Winterset, Grant, and Villisca areas. To this union three children were born: Rolland Howard, Patricia Jean, and Curtis Paul. In 1984 they retired from farming and Howard and Velma bought a house in Villisca. Howard passed away on June 1, 1986. She married Donald Means on September 15, 1987. They resided in Villisca, Iowa until his death on June 17, 2007. After his death she moved to Acorn Acres in Red Oak. In March 2008 she moved to Bloomfield, Nebraska to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She became a resident of the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Society in September 2008. She loved children and donated her time in 4-H and teaching Junior Bowling. She enjoyed babysitting for children in her neighborhood. She was an avid bowler being elected to the local Bowlers Hall of Fame in Red Oak. Cross stitching, sewing, baking, mowing, gardening, fishing, and antiquing were her hobbies. When her grandchildren were young, she loved making matching outfits for them. She enjoyed any events that involved her family: attending football games and wrestling matches, gymnastic events, musicals and concerts, fishing trips, camping, family reunions, weekly card games with her brothers and sisters, and the special holidays when she would cook and bake all the family favorites to eat. She was noted for her beef and noodles, her homemade oatmeal and banana nut breads and card tables full of Christmas cookies(especially the decorated sugar cookies and the sour cream chocolate cookies) and candies. She was always ready to pop a huge bowl of popcorn for the grandkids. She loved her family and friends dearly. Velma is survived by her children: Rolland (Nancy) Bradley of St. Louis, Missouri; Patricia (Dudley) Baack of Bloomfield, Nebraska; Curtis (Denise) Bradley of Corning, Iowa; Grandchildren: Matthew (and special friend Dayna Sweeney) of Lenox, Iowa, Jeffrey (Tammy) Baack of Omaha, Nebraska, Nathan (Brooke) Bradley of Muscatine, Iowa, Timothy Baack of Omaha, Nebraska, Crystal Bradley of St. Louis, Missouri, Mikaela (fiancé Dustin Gangstead) of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Great-grandchildren: Parker Baack and Sophia Knutson of Omaha Nebraska. and 2 great-grandchildren expected in September and October; Sisters: Dorothy (Earl) Gammell and Ailene (Merrill) Coates, and brother Robert Betts all of Red Oak, Iowa; sister-in law Phyllis (Ivan) Funk of Shenandoah, Iowa and several nieces and nephews; Step-children: Carol Gilleland, Stanley D. (Stacy) Means, and Norma (Phil) Garland all of Villisca, Iowa and step-grandchildren: Troy (Jenny), Donna (Brian), Perrie (Michelle), David (Ronda), Patrick and special friend Brenda, Brian ,and Amber; 11 step-greatgrandchildren. Velma was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, brother James Betts and wife Willie; brother Melvin Betts and wife Dena; brother-in-law Lloyd Bradley. Velma was a member of the Villisca United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held 11 AM , June 25, 2009 at the Villisca United Methodist Church with Rev. Gordon Scott officiating. Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa at 2:00P.M. on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
