Tommy Odel “Tom” Bates, age 66, of Macedonia, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at his home. Tom was born May 26, 1959, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of James and Joyce (Keast) Bates. He was raised on a farm near Oakland, Iowa, and graduated from Oakland High School in 1978. He worked in the construction business all his life in the Oakland area. Tom was united in marriage to Jody Winklemann, and two children were born to this union: Andrew and Katie. He was later united in marriage to Linda Querry Stoural in 1991 and they made their home in Macedonia, Iowa. This is when he started his own construction business called Homeside. Ron loved his carpentry work and loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman who loved going to Minnesota, especially the boundary waters and was fascinated by the loons. Tom enjoyed camping, hunting, riding bikes, and hiking. Tom’s faith was very important to him, and he was a longtime member of the Fellowship Church in Oakland. He loved his church family, where he was very active in teaching classes and was a counselor.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother: Bruce Weaver. Survivors include his wife: Linda Bates of Macedonia, Iowa; children: Andrew Bates and wife Katie of Sandpoint, ID; Branden Stoural and wife Kelsi of Ord, NE; and Kimberly Chupp and husband Kris of Boseman, MT; grandchildren: Wilder, Scout, Rueger, Golden, and Bluebelle Bates of Sandpoint, ID; Joshua, Elijah, and Isaac Stoural of Ord, NE; and Harvie Chupp of Boseman, MT; sister: Beverly Simonton and husband Kelly of Atlantic, IA; brother: Scott Bates and wife Linda of Minneapolis, MN; brother-in-law: Gary Querry and wife Linda of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law: Nancy Roed and husband Dave of Burlington, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life funeral will be held at 11 AM Monday, March 30, 2026, at the Fellowship Church in Oakland. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Macedonia Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Macedonia Fire Department.
