Obituary

Birthplace: Phoenix, Arizona Resided In: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Tom Johnson, age 85, of rural, Red Oak, Iowa, passed away peacefully, after a long illness, on November 2, 2016 at the Red Oak Good Samaritan Society. Tom was born July 21, 1931 in Phoenix, Arizona the son of E.D. and Genevieve (Davies) Johnson. Tom moved to the rural Red Oak area at a young age when his father left teaching and coaching and went into farming on his wife's family farms. He was active in 4-H showing livestock and developed a love of cars and automotive mechanics. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1949 and began farming in the Garfield Township area until drafted into the United States Army in 1951. He served as a mechanic with the 160th Field Artillery-45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard and was stationed in Northeast Korea during the Korean Conflict. While in Korea he became very ill and has always credited Dr. Bobby Brown, then a medic, who went on to play 3rd base for the New York Yankees and become president of the American Baseball League, for saving his life. Tom was able to correspond with Dr. Brown last Christmas and finally thank him for saving his life. Tom married LaCasta Hoxie on October 18, 1953 in Tabor, Iowa. They moved to a family farm west of Red Oak where they have lived their entire married life. He was active in farming and was owner/operator of Johnson Trucking for 45 years along with his wife. Two children were born to this marriage, Tony Thomas Johnson and Diana Johnson Marcketta. Tom was also an avid NASCAR fan and for many years participated in area demolition derbies. In his later years, his love was watching his grandchildren grow up and bragging about them to his morning coffee buddies. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Davis and Genevieve. He is survived by his spouse of 63 years, LaCasta Johnson; his children; Tony T Johnson and wife Michele of Red Oak, Iowa and Diana Johnson Marcketta of Simi Valley, California; grandchildren: Shelby Johnson and special friend Trey Wise of Omaha, Nebraska; Dr. Blaine Johnson and special friend Abby Schubert of Red Oak; Canden Johnson and wife Liz Cooper Johnson of Red Oak; and Grant Marcketta of Simi Valley; other relatives and many friends including his faithful companion, "Peaches" the dog.
