Birthplace: Clarion, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA Terry Michael Wright, age 80, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society. Terry was born September 9, 1940 in Clarion, Iowa, the son of George and Vivienne (Tollefson) Wright. The family lived in many places in Iowa before moving to Red Oak where Terry graduated in the class of 1959. He then attended Clarinda Junior College and later Morningside College where he played basketball. Terry was a wonderful athlete and was nicknamed "Horse" when he was young. While in high school, he qualified for two state events on the same day, track and golf. He received 6th place in the discus in track and field and 2nd place in the state golf tournament. In later years, Terry was inducted into the Red Oak Athletic Hall of Fame. Terry was united in marriage to Darla Crawford on November 21, 1962 in Greenfield, Iowa. They lived in Clarinda, Bedford, and Shenandoah before moving to Red Oak in 1967. Terry worked many years at Eveready Battery Company where he retired. He then drove a bus and taught driver education for the Red Oak School District for many years. Terry would often take his rural route kids for ice cream at McDonald's. He was a longtime member of the First Covenant Church. Terry enjoyed having coffee with his friends and spending time with his kids and grandkids. He loved watching their sporting events. Terry tried to make all of the Tennis matches at Central College where Paige attended. Terry was an avid golfer who won the Red Oak Country Club Championship Tournament in 1978 and was runner up many years. He was also a craftsman doing skillful carpentry work and interior decorating including wallpapering. He was an artist as well, drawing the kids, pets, tigers, and many other things. He gave several drawings to the school over the years. Terry was also a master gardener which you could see in his yard and many beautiful flower beds. During retirement, Darla and Terry spent time camping in their RV which the family said was quite the adventure. They always enjoyed taking their grandchildren and little dog, Nemo. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Darla on September 4, 2016; grandson: Jordan Vannausdle; and brother-in-law: Gary Poore. Survivors include his children: Tom Wright and wife Ronnel Herzberg of Red Oak; Tracy Vannausdle and husband Roger of Red Oak; and Holly Brown of Littleton, CO; grandchildren: Eric Vannausdle and fiancee Chelsea Hale of Red Oak; Paige Karloff and husband Ben of Ankeny, IA; Cori Brown and Eryn Brown of Littleton, CO; Courtney Owen of Des Moines, IA; and Tom Gourley and wife Haley of Villisca, IA; great grandchildren: Miley, Jax, Austyn, Emersyn, Paxton, and Kohen; sisters-in-law: Barbara Poore of Indianapolis, IN and Georgia Carpenter and husband Glenn of Omaha, NE; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the First Covenant Church with Pastor Alan Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Covenant Church or the Red Oak Country Club. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
