Birthplace: Des Moines, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa formerly Emerson, Iowa Shirley Snyder Honeyman entered into rest December 12, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak, Iowa. Shirley was born January 23, 1924 in Des Moines, Ia., the daughter of Dr. Raleigh R. Snyder and Hazel Kirk Stewart Snyder. She attended Greenwood Elementary and graduated from Roosevelt High School, Des Moines, Ia. After high school, she attended one year at Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Mo., then transferred to Iowa State University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development in 1945. She also received a varsity letter from ISU in swimming. In 1946 she established the children's recreational program for pediatric longterm care at Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines, only one of three in the U.S. Shirley attended the San Luis Girls' Ranch in Colorado Springs, Co., during the summers of 1929 -1945 and was a camp counselor from 1940-1945. Shirley attained 60 hrs post graduate work in Art and Elementary Education from University of Nebraska @ Omaha receiving a K- 8 Elementary Education Certificate. She also did post graduate work at the Gesell Institute of Child Development and Early Childhood Education, New Haven, Connecticut. Shirley was united in marriage to W. Lee Honeyman on April 6, 1946 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was hired as a Kindergarten and Art teacher by Red Oak Community School, serving positions at Wales, Jefferson, And Webster Elementary. She loved teaching new minds. Shirley was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Iowa State University; a member of the "I" Club, the first synchronized swimming team for ISU. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Abigail Adams Chapter. Shirley was a 4-H leader in Montgomery Co., secretary of the Red Oak Education Assoc., President of the American Association of University Women, Red Oak Chapter. She was a member, Sunday School teacher, and elder in the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. She was a girl scout leader and a summer camp counselor for Presbyterian Church Camp. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma in Red Oak. Also, she was a board member for Montgomery County Historical Society. And, she received the ISU Alumni Service Award. Shirley loved children and was always interested in their development. She loved the outdoors and was a good horseman. A natural artist, she appreciated the beauty of nature. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, W. Lee Honeyman; daughter, Margaret Ann (Peg) Honeyman Corbin; her parents, Dr. R.R. and Hazel Snyder; brothers: Stewart and Sheldon Snyder; and son-in-law: Ron Drake. Her surviving family is Tom & Bianka Honeyman of Emerson, IA; Mark & Anne Honeyman of Ames, IA; and Sue Drake of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren: Jeremy and Amy Carlo (Emma and Jacob) of Fallon, NV; Jon and Jamie Carlo (Ben, Claire, Sophie, and Olivia) of Glenwood, IA; Kate & Scott Engel of Lincoln, NE, Mary and Jared Speichinger (Warren) of Gilman, IA; William "Bill" & Peyton Honeyman of Emerson, IA; Adam & Heidi Drake (Aubrey and Josie) and Bonnie & Jason Abbuhl (Jack and Maggie) of Solon, IA; Jay Honeyman of Ames, IA; Eve Honeyman of Ames, IA; and Robin Honeyman of Des Moines, IA; nephew: Stephen Snyder, and many friends in the Red Oak, Iowa area. Graveside funeral services will be held 1 PM Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Shirley Honeyman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Due to Covid 19, we are limited to a maximum of thirty people in attendance at a graveside funeral with social distancing and wearing masks required.
