Samuel Joseph "Sam" Helm, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at his home. Sam was born March 19, 1945 in Montgomery County, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Lela (Christensen) Helm. He grew up near Elliott, Iowa, graduating from Griswold High School in 1964. He was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam war and served overseas. He was united in marriage to Darlene Anderson on September 13, 1969 in Griswold, Iowa. He lived most of his adult life in Red Oak, Iowa. Sam worked many years at D & L which became ROMECH where he retired. Sam was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, scrapping metal, and in his younger years playing Softball. He also loved western movies and was a Boy Scout Leader for many years. Sam was known to be a man of few words, but would help anyone anytime.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: LeRoy and Edwin; and sister:  Inez Bundgard. Survivors include his children: JoAn DeWitt and husband Jeremy of Red Oak, IA; Joseph Helm of Manassas, VA; and Troy Helm and wife Jessica of Carter Lake, IA; grandchildren: Tyler DeWitt and wife Rebecca of Kimballton, IA; Trent DeWitt of Red Oak, IA; Kylee Helm of Catlett, VA; Parker Helm of Carter Lake, IA; and Emma Helm of Carter Lake, IA; brother: Elmer Helm of Stanton, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, April 28, 2023, at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.
