Birthplace: Rhinelander, Wisconsin Resided In: Shenandoah formerly Emerson Ruth Greenwood, age 80, of Shenandoah, Iowa formerly Emerson, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at the Hospice With Heart Hospice House in Glenwood, Iowa. Ruth Miriam Greenwood was born September 6, 1929 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin the daughter of Gunnard and Hulda (Carlson) Grahn. She graduated from the Aiken, Minnesota High School and later the Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska in 1950. Ruth was united in marriage to Edward Greenwood on October 10, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska. They lived most of their married life in Emerson, Iowa. Ruth was a nurse at the Murphy Memorial Hospital for several years and then worked for the Emerson Post Office for 23 years retiring as Postmaster. Over the years Ruth attended the Emerson Baptist Church where she was involved with the Ladies Aid for many years. She was also a member of Emerson Community Club and American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth was involved with the Senior Citizens in several communities and sang with the Happy Warblers in Red Oak. In Shenandoah, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women being an honorary member this year, WHEOS, and the church quilting group. Ruth's most enjoyment came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; brother: Gunnard Grahn; and husband: Edward Greenwood on January 23, 2005. Survivors include her children: Sherry Hambsch of Shenandoah, Iowa; Shirley Orton and husband Stan of Shenandoah, Iowa; and Berkeley Greenwood and wife Nancy of Glenwood, Iowa; grandchildren: Brian Maxine and wife Stacy of Shenandoah, Iowa; Melissa Ross of Bellevue, Nebraska; Jeffrey Hambsch and wife Joleen of Syracuse, New York; Jason Kinsley of Council Bluffs, Iowa; John Greenwood of Bellevue, Nebraska; Scott Greenwood of Glenwood, Iowa; and Erin Greenwood of Fall River, Massachusetts; great grandchildren: Corby Ross, Soley Kinsley, Sophia Maxine, and Emma Hambsch; brothers: Ted Grahn and wife Carolyn of Dawson, Minnesota; Dale Grahn and wife Joyce of Duluth, Minnesota; Carl Grahn and wife Janice of Australia; and Norman Grahn and wife Elaine of Sierra Vista, Arizona; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa with Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating. Burial will be held prior to the service at the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, the Shenandoah Senior Citizens, or the Hopsice With Heart in Glenwood, Iowa. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
