Russell Lee “Russ” Peterson, age 60, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Red Oak, Iowa. Russ was born March 7, 1966, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Howard and Rosalie (Dunbar) Peterson. Russ was raised in Omaha, Nebraska and Malvern, Iowa where he graduated in 1985. During his years at Malvern High School, Russ excelled on the football field. He was a talented athlete whose abilities earned him numerous college scholarship offers, and his love for the game stayed with him throughout his life.

Russ worked in construction for most of his life. Construction wasn't just a job for Russ—it was something he genuinely loved. He took great pride in his work, especially bricklaying and concrete work, and spent much of his career helping build projects throughout southwest Iowa. While he worked for several local construction companies over the years, he was best known for his time with Smith Construction.

Outside of work, Russ enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, mowing, and cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. Football was always one of his greatest passions.

More than anything, Russ loved his family and friends. He was incredibly proud of his daughter, Ashley, and adored his granddaughters, Aria and Aurora. Those who knew Russ will remember his big heart, his willingness to help others, and the love he had for his family. Like many, he faced challenges throughout his life, but those closest to him knew the caring, generous man behind them.

Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his daughter: Ashley Soat and husband Eric of Red Oak, Iowa; granddaughters: Aria Soat and Aurora Soat of Red Oak, Iowa; brother: Howard Peterson and wife LeAnn of Malvern, Iowa; nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends.

A private family graveside service will take place. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon to celebrate Russ’s life on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 12 noon at the McAlpin Place in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to Zion in Red Oak, Iowa.
