Obituary

Richard Arthur "Dick" Mikuls, age 88, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away May 12, 2025, at The Heritage at Legacy in Omaha. Dick was born on August 15, 1936, in Cicero, Illinois, the son of Welhemina "Minnie" and Peter. Dick led a charmed life despite his difficult beginnings in Cicero. As a youth he was an Eagle Scout and a member of the "Blue Jays" club. After Peter passed away when Dick was a teenager, Dick grew up through his high school years in Cicero with his mom, Minnie, his sisters, Dolores and Ruth, his brother, Billy, and his grandmother, Anna. While growing up in tough financial conditions, Dick worked hard to better himself and help his family. Even though his family worked hard to make ends meet, Dickie seems to have taken it in stride. Dick used to say, "When I was young, my mom cut holes in my pockets, so I had something to play with."

After working at a local factory after his high school graduation, Dick's grandmother, Anna, was instrumental in motivating and helping Dick go to Creighton University. To help pay for college, Dick joined Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and worked while attending Creighton. In addition to his ROTC duties and part-time work, Dick was very active on campus, serving as president of both Alpha Sigma Nu (Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges & Universities) and Rho Chi (Pharmnacy Honor Society), treasurer of Phi Delta Chi (Professional Pharmacy Fraternity), member of Creighton's Board of Governors, and being active in other associations and intramural athletics. It was at Creighton that Dick met his future wife, Gerrylu Hogan.

After marriage and Dick's graduation from Creighton University School of Pharmacy, Dick and Gerrylu moved to the U.S. Army military base in Fort Carson just outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, when Dick was called up to active duty for one year of service in the Army Reserves due to the "Syrian Crisis of 1957." His one year of active duty came and went without Dick being deployed.

Dick and Gerrylu moved back to Omaha where Dick worked as a pharmacist and became a partner in Beaton Drug pharmacy, and they grew their family, having six children: Greg, Steve, Ken, Chris, Ted, and Molly. In 1971, the Mikuls Family moved to Red Oak, Iowa, where Dick purchased Ideal Pharmacy. Years later, Dick formed Fountain Square Pharmacy with another pharmacy in town. Dick coached his kids' sports teams, primarily soccer during the Omaha years, and later baseball during the Red Oak years. Dick even tried to introduce soccer to Red Oak back in the early 1970s by setting up an exhibition game between Creighton University and University of Nebraska at Omaha. As Dick was always adamant about the importance of a good education, he was invested in the teaching process. In addition to being the household expert in math and science, Dick was also involved with the Red Oak School Board, serving as its president. Dick was always very entrepreneurial, owning numerous rental properties and starting the first company in Iowa and Nebraska to deliver and support medical equipment and supplies to patients' homes.

In 1982, Dick and Gerrylu moved to Omaha. After selling the medical equipment business, Dick became a real estate agent. With his personal knowledge of investing in real estate, combined with his outgoing, friendly personality, Dick enjoyed the many friendships he made during his years as a realtor. After their move back to Omaha, Dick and Gerrylu separated, ending their marriage, but maintained their friendship. Years later, Dick was blessed to meet Patricia "Pat" Williams, another real estate agent. Together with friends, they enjoyed many years of traveling, golfing, and spending time together until Pat's passing in 2008.

Dick was a good, honest man. He seldom cursed, and usually only did so when his children (primarily Chris or Steve) prompted him. Dick hardly ever drank alcohol and did not smoke. He was a man of faith and a proverbial straight-shooter. He always enjoyed getting together with family and friends. An avid Creighton Bluejay and Husker fan, he enjoyed going to basketball and football games with friends and family, especially his grandkids. Dick's family and friends will miss his loving ways, his honesty and integrity, and his clean and optimistic approach to life. Even when things got tough in Dick's life, Dick simply said that he was blessed. By living such a blessed life, Richard's loving and optimistic ways will continue to live on through his family and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Pat Williams, and many dear friends. Dick is survived by Gerrylu, his children, Greg (Janie) of Omaha, Steve (Jolene) of Omaha, Ken (Cheryl) of Parkville, MO, Chris (Jacquie) of Leawood, KS, Ted (Michelle) of Omaha, and Molly Mikuls (Tommy Armknecht) of Omaha; his 17 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
