Birthplace: Iowa City, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Richard Dean French, age 73, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Richard was born August 23, 1942 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Charles William and Evelyn Cora (Marvick) French. He attended school in Villisca and served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served in California where he met and married Donna Iles on August 1, 1964 in Anaheim. Dick used to pick Donna up in a VP boat and take her out to the ship for dinner. They moved back to Red Oak in 1966. Over the years, he worked for Wilson Concrete, LeRette's TV and Appliance, Uniroyal, Omaha World Herald, and part time as French's Handyman Service retiring at the age of 43. He was a member of the Villisca United Methodist Church. His hobbies included attending his grandchildren's sporting events, woodworking, collecting model cars, musical jukeboxes, bowling, attending car shows with his 1961 Buick, and video taping the grandkids during the holidays and birthdays. He always said, "smile at the camera". Richard also enjoyed coaching his sons' baseball teams, participating in demolition derbies, watching his boys play kick the can and riding wheelies on their bikes, dancing with Donna, and going to the movies. He was honored to be named as a Grand Marshall for the Red Oak Homecoming Parade and He and Donna for Fans of The Year. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Donald Joe French and Elden C. French; and sister: Linda Hardy. Survivors include his wife of 51 years: Donna French of Red Oak; children: Robert French of Minnesota; Dale French and wife Sueann of Red Oak; Dewey French and wife Connie of Clarinda, IA; and Dusty French and wife Jennifer of Red Oak; grandchildren: Chloe Delay and husband Aaron of Arizona; Gabrielle French of Sioux City, IA; Gavin French of Cedar Rapids, IA; Brandon, Cody, and Cheyenne French of Clarinda; and Logan, Piper, Cameo, and Linde French of Red Oak; great grandchildren: Jace and Corbin Delay; sister: Ruth Hubbard and husband Frank of Kansas; sister-in-law: Sharon Shelton and husband Larry of California; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
