Birthplace: Nodaway, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Rev. Robert Smith, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society after an extended illness. Robert Lee Smith was born November 16, 1927 in Nodaway, Iowa the son of Mearl and Bernice (Kapple) Smith. He was raised in southwest Iowa graduating from the Lenox, Iowa High School in 1946 and attended the University of Iowa for one year. Robert was united in marriage to Mary Eyberg on August 22, 1948 in Arispe, Iowa. They lived in the Creston and Nodaway area where Bob operated Bob's Garage in Nodaway. Robert served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954. In 1968, Robert and Mary moved to Eddyville, where Bob entered the ministry. He graduated from William Penn University in 1971 and St.Paul School of Theology in 1974. They served United Methodist churches in Eddyville, Chillicothe, and Columbia; Waterloo (Graves) and Evansdale; Nashua and Republic; Lehigh, Otho, and Lungren; West Bend and Mallard, Iowa before retiring and moving to Red Oak in 1992. He also served churches at Marne and Buck Creek after retirement. Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a volunteer for many years. He received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1988 and the Iowa Health Care Clergy of the Year Award in 1989. Robert enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, making quilts, fishing and woodworking. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Mary on November 28, 2011; and brother: Cleo Smith. Survivors include his children: David Smith and wife Cheryl of Omaha, NE; Gene Smith and wife Jeanine of Arlington, NE; Paul Smith and wife Kathy of Promise City, IA; Roy Smith and wife Tyra of Pulaski, WI; and Marianne Heyne and husband Lorn of Lajes Air Base, Azores, Portugal; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Dale Smith and wife Deloras of Goodyear, AZ; Gene Smith and wife Betty of Villisca, IA; Donald Smith and wife Saundra of Hillrose, CO; Marvin Smith of Nodaway, IA; Dorothy Bozwell and husband Lester of Red Oak, IA; and Beverly White and husband Wendell of Englewood, CO; sister-in-law: Sharon Smith of Lees Summit, MO; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Nodaway, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Joy Camp of Mobile United Methodist Missions for church camp scholarships. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
