Birthplace: Rural Essex, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Raymond Leroy Johnson, age 91, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Ray was born August 13, 1925 on a farm near Essex, Iowa the son of Reuben and Mae (Royer) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Essex High School in 1941. He started his working career farming for nine years. Ray was united in marriage to Marianna Howell on June 2, 1946 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He worked for the Stennett School for 6 years as a custodian. Ray started his construction career with Vannausdle Construction in 1960 and in 1965 worked with his brother Wally. He eventually started Ray Johnson Construction in 1968. He was a long time member of the Red Oak Optimist Club, a former Elks Lodge member, and was on the Board at Regency Retirement Community. Ray loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He also had other hobbies including, fishing, hunting, bowling, softball, and was an avid golfer. Preceding him in death were his parents; two young siblings; brothers: Dencil, Harold, and Wally; and sisters: Maxine Glassinger and Marvis Harms. Survivors include his wife: Marianna Johnson of Red Oak; daughter: Diane Froehlich and husband Kirby of Spencer, IA; son: Dick Johnson and wife Ann of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Kim Kent and husband Adam of Panora, IA; Danee Zwerk and husband Scott of Red Oak, IA; Jennifer Beck and husband Matt of Boise, ID; Heather Huddle and husband Josh of Stanton, IA; and Brandi Blackman and husband Bret of Red Oak, IA; great grandchildren: Haylie, Jackson, Ashlyn, Nolan, Brandon, Kaitlin, and Ella; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Ron Bupp officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Ray Johnson Memorial Fund. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
