Phyllis Ruth Nadine (Johnson) Sunberg, age 94, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Phyllis was born June 6, 1930, in Essex, Iowa, the daughter of Martin William and Lily Irene (Peterson) Johnson. Phyllis was united in marriage to William Gustaf Sunberg on June 7, 1953, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex, Iowa. Over the years she taught at Elliott, Shenandoah, and Red Oak where she substituted for many years. Phyllis and Bill lived all of their married life on the Sunberg family farm south of Red Oak until moving into Red Oak in 1996. She helped Bill with the farming operation and was a wonderful businesswoman, taking care of the books for years. Phyllis was a longtime member of the First Covenant Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She served in many capacities in the Covenant Women's Ministries. She loved serving and caring for people and the community and was very generous to those in need. Phyllis spent many hours visiting people in hospital and nursing homes.
