Phyllis Corene Stebbins, age 100, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Prairie Gate Retirement Community in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Phyllis was born on April 1, 1925, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph J. and Vera E. (Caruth) Stebbins. Her family made their home in Orange City, Sheldon, Estherville, Sioux City, and Missouri Valley before moving to Red Oak in 1940.
Phyllis graduated from Red Oak Community High School in 1942 and was employed by the Montgomery County National Bank as a bookkeeper until 1946 when she went to work as Deputy Clerk of the District Court. In 1956, Phyllis was made Clerk of District Court and held that position for the next 41 years until her retirement in 1987.
Phyllis was active in the Red Oak Presbyterian Church where she served as a church elder, a member of the board of trustees, church Treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and a long-time member of the choir. She was also active in Presbyterian Women serving as the Circle Chairman and Treasurer.
Phyllis was a BPW member for over 60 years and joined Altrusa Club in 1957, of which she was still a member.
After retirement, Phyllis enjoyed spending time with her family at the family's vacation home at Lake Okoboji. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, knitting, quilting, tatting, and cross stitching.
Preceding her in death were her parents; sisters: Shirley Stebbins and Geraldine Humphrey; brother: Ralph Stebbins; brother-in-law: Blaine Humphrey; and sisters-in-law: Evelyn Stebbins and Joan Stebbins.
Survivors include her brother: Robert Stebbins of Council Bluffs, Iowa; niece: Susan Steffens (Roy Miller) of Omaha, Nebraska; niece: Diane Michalski and husband Blake of Omaha, Nebraska; nephew: Robert Stebbins, Jr and wife Louisa of Clermont, Florida; and many great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life funeral will be held at 11 AM Monday, May 12, 2025, at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. A luncheon will follow the service and later burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery.
LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
