Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Omaha, Nebraska FRANKLIN- Phyllis D., Phyllis Dean "Pete" Peterson was born on Oct. 26 1924 in Red Oak, IA. As the 8th child of Emil & O'Telia Peterson she was brought up on a farm with many sisters & brothers. Her sisters, Irene Carlson, Helen Hoffman (D), Jean Kerr, Marilyn Lemke and her brothers, Maurice (D), Vernon (D), Donald (D) & Kenneth Peterson, were a rowdy bunch. Her brother Kenneth once had Phyllis drive a tractor in the hot summer sun for so long that the resulting sunburn convinced her to avoid the sun for the rest of her life. Graduated in 1942 from Red Oak High School, she went on to join the US Cadet Nursing Training Core through St. Joe's/Creighton Nursing School. Phyllis remained in close contact with many of her classmates and enjoyed going to the Nursing School Reunions She married James Ralph Franklin on February 9, 1946 in Sabetha, Kansas. They moved to Omaha where their 1st child Steven James was born on March 1, 1947. In 1948 they moved back to Red Oak. Their 2nd son, David Ray, was born on July 24, 1948. He died on March 29th 1954 from Meningitis. Distraught they moved back to Omaha to 33rd & Martin Ave. It was a fun neighborhood and they made many friends including a famous neighbor, Johnny Carson. Their 3rd child, Julie Ann, was born on March 4, 1957. Then in 1959 they moved to 99th St in Sunset Hills. Phyllis joined the Sunset Hills Garden Club. She loved gardening and doing crafts with the club. Their 4th child, Kendra Sue, was born on August 16, 1962. In 1964 they built their dream home at 1221 S 118th St in Skylark Heights. During this time Phyllis continued with her Garden Club and joined a Bridge club. She loved playing cards and bridge was her favorite. She also took up tennis, spending a lot of time on the courts of The Tennis Club. Until age 69 Phyllis could still play an impressive game of tennis. Phyllis enjoyed being a housewife, but with the last child entering college she decided to work outside of the home. For 18yrs she was the Cafeteria Manager of Crestridge Elementary School & the Omaha Public School System. On-Feb 19, 1978, her son Steven & his wife Paulette presented her with a first grandchild, Zachery Steven Franklin. On Feb 2 1980, a 2nd grandson, David Doran Franklin was born. The happy grandparents were pleased to have another David in the Franklin family. June 29 1990, shortly after Jim's retirement another grandson, Kevin William Perdew, was born to their daughter, Kendra's family. The grandchildren had their final addition on Feb. 9, 1994, another grandson, Aaron James Perdew. Phyllis loved being a grandma. She referred to herself as Grandma Mimi, & Jim was Papa. When they weren't wintering in Arizona, they would visit their daughter Kendra, her husband Chuck Karbowski & sons in Sioux Falls, SD. In 2001they moved from the family home of 37yrs to the home at 17602 Leavenworth St. in Pacific Springs. They liked traveling and drove all over the U.S. Visiting with daughter Julie & husband Steve Pirner, while they were in Arizona, was always a pleasure. Phyllis Franklin died in her home on Oct 3rd 2003, of congestive heart failure at the age of 78, just 23 days before her birthday. VISITATION- Monday 5:30-7:30 pm at Crosby Colonial Chapel, 11902 W. Center Rd. Omaha, NE SERVICES -Tuesday 2:00pm at Nelson-Boylan-Lerette Funeral Chapel, Red Oak IA. INTERMENT at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, IA Reception to follow at the Red Coach Inn, Hwy 34 Red Oak Memorials to American Heart Association.
