Birthplace: Rural Elliott, Iowa Resided In: Griswold, Iowa Phyllis Marguerite Buroughs, age 94, of Griswold, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at the Griswold Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident since 2010. Phyllis was born June 3, 1921 near Elliott, Iowa, the daughter of Gus F. and Doris Z. (McCaskey) Shellberg. She was raised near Elliott graduating from Elliott High School in 1938. She received her Normal Training in Griswold, Iowa and taught country school before her marriage to Harlan Buroughs on October 6, 1944 in Griswold. They lived 30 years on the farm in Noble Township before moving into Griswold in 1976. Phyllis worked part time at Glen Robin Orchard for over forty years. She was a long time member of the Central Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, led a women's Bible study for 23 years, and was an active member of the Ladies Circle. She was a 4-H leader, was a member of her neighborhood club, and a member of the Griswold Optimist Club. Phyllis spent her whole life honoring Jesus Christ as her Savior and was just as devoted to her family whom she loved very dearly. Her family describes her as hard working, loving, and dedicated. She always had time to listen when they needed her. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Harlan Buroughs and sister: Bea Albright. Survivors include her children: Ronald Buroughs and wife Sheryl of Griswold; Marilyn Dietz and husband Jerry of Red Oak, IA; Richard Buroughs and wife Jan of Gretna, NE; and Nancy Potter and husband Bruce of Griswold; grandchildren: Jennifer Weidman and husband Mark of Washington, IA; Julie Danker and husband Shad of Minden, IA; Jill Hoover and husband Jason of Indianola, IA; Marc Dietz and wife Shae of Ozark, AR; Melanie West and husband Aaron of Red Oak; Nancy Johns and husband Nate of Gretna; Charity Mundorf and husband Jeffrey of Red Oak; and Bryce Potter and wife Megan of Griswold; great grandchildren: Blake and Brenna Weidman; Ryan and Kallie Danker; Karsen, John, and Luke Hoover; Marleigh and Dawson Dietz; Will and Allie West; Cole, Ella, and Graham Johns; Walker, Morgan, Josie, and Emma Mundorf; and Auden and Emersyn Potter; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold, Iowa. Burial will be in the Flint Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the Central Church of Christ. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
