Birthplace: Rural Elliott, Iowa Resided In: Rural Elliott, Iowa Philip C. Turner, age 92, of Elliott, Iowa passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak. Philip Cyrus Turner was born February 23, 1916 in Sherman Township of Montgomery County, Iowa the son of James Hamilton and Elizabeth Ada (Woods) Turner. He graduated from Stennett High School in 1934 and began driving a truck. He was united in marriage to Viola Ruth Boan on August 18, 1936 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Over the years Philip did custom combining, bailing, and bulldozing as well as farmed including raising sheep, cattle, milk cows, and chickens. He was a longtime member of the Elliott Church of Christ where he served as Elder and was named Honorary Lifetime Elder. He also served on the Stennett School Board for many years, was a 4-H leader for over 40 years, was a member of the Montgomery County Historical Society, a member of the Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Elliott Business and Betterment Association. Philip enjoyed traveling whether it was by car or by railroad. He had a great fascination with the history of railroads and history in general. He loved to visit with friends and family and always enjoyed flying with his son, Larry. He was an innovator, always trying to figure out how to make things work and was willing to try new things. He loved his family and will be missed by many. Philip was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of seventy years: Viola Turner on August 24, 2006; and two half brothers: Earl and Lee Sattro. Survivors include his children: Larry Turner and wife Judy of Elliott, Iowa; Diane McCunn and husband Myron of Orion, Illinois; Doug Turner and wife Marla of Elliott, Iowa; Todd Turner and wife Terri of Wales, Iowa; and Tracy Turner of Elliott, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa with Rev. Mel Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Church of Christ, the Elliott First Responders, or the Montgomery County Historical Society. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
