Birthplace: Rural Emerson, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, IA & Tucson, AZ Peggy Jean Green, age 83, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013 at her daughter's home in Creston, Iowa. Peggy Jean Green was born November 27, 1929 in rural Emerson, Iowa the daughter of William and Jessie (Smith) Douglas. She graduated from the Emerson High School in 1946 and attended Tarkio College where she received her teaching certificate. She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse near Wales, Iowa. Peggy Jean was united in marriage to Jack Hoenshel on May 17, 1951 and to this union four children were born: Deborah, Peggy, Scott, and Wendy. Peggy Jean lived in Denmark and Pocahontas, Iowa before moving to Centerville where she lived for many years. She later moved to Unionville, Missouri and in 1987 started spending winters in Tucson, Arizona. She was united in marriage to Max Green on January 6, 1993 in Bull Head City, Arizona and they started spending the summers in Red Oak about 8 years ago. At one point in her life she was on Governor Ray's Task Force for Indochinese Resettlement to bring refugees to Iowa. This was very dear to her heart. Peggy Jean was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing cards, including Bridge, and crossword puzzles. Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter: Deborah L. Hoenshel; brother: George Douglas and sister: Marjorie Bass. Survivors include her husband: Max Green of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Peggy Keele and husband Mark of Cedar Rapids, IA; Scott Hoenshel and wife Niki of Spring, TX; and Wendy Hartsock and husband Tom of Creston, IA; grandchildren: Spencer Mathews and wife Tracy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Elijah and Emeri Hoenshel of Spring, Tx; and Samuel and Sydney Hartsock of Creston, IA; step-children: Dennis Green and wife Sheila of Mesa, AZ; Christine Green and husband Anthony Garcia of Tucson, AZ; and Sylvia Kothe and husband James of Tucson, AZ; step-grandchildren: Emily and Nicholas Kothe of Tucson, AZ; brother: William Douglas and wife Barbara of Emerson, IA; sisters: Joan Moore of Cathedral City, CA and Barbara C. Douglas of Georgetown, TX; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives, friends, and classmates. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Emerson United Methodist Church with Pastor Denise Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
