Obituary

Patricia Jeanette (Adams) Maher, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at her home. Patricia was born May 23, 1936, in Red Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Dean and Gertrude (Steward) Adams. She graduated from Red Oak High School in the class of 1953 and later Northwest Missouri State University with a Physical Education degree and a minor in English. Pat was united in marriage to George E. Maher on November 24, 1956, in Red Oak, Iowa. Pat lived all of her life in Red Oak, Iowa, except for one year after marriage when they lived in Des Moines. She taught physical education for 30 years at Coburg, Stennett, and Red Oak. Pat touched thousands of children's lives in her long teaching career. She was always an advocate for children selflessly helping those in need in any way she could. She was a positive role model for many students. Pat was a very loving and giving person who made every person feel special. She took in all strays, four legged and two legged and showed them love. Pat loved her family immensely and it showed in everything she did, always putting them and others before herself. Pat was very active along with her husband George in making Red Oak a wonderful place to call home. She was instrumental in bringing gymnastics and volleyball to the Red Oak School system. Pat started an exercise group called Huff-N-Puff and loved moving to the music of "Go You Chicken Fat Go". Pat's civic duties included being a member of Total Awareness (drug prevention and rehabilitation program), a Red Oak Animal Shelter volunteer, a Theater Off The Square volunteer performing in many shows, a longtime board member of Save Our Depot, and was very active in St. Mary's Catholic Church. She served on the Altar Society and sang at funerals and weddings in years past. Pat always had a passion for music, a song for every situation, and loved to whistle with the cardinals. Pat loved life and even in her last days was fighting to remain active with friends and family. Preceding her in death was her husband, George on February 3, 2017. Survivors include her children: Mike Maher and wife Dee of Omaha, NE; Kim Robinson (Audie Rainey) of Red Oak, IA; and Kristi Patrick of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Patrick Maher and wife Rachel of Omaha, NE; Kelsey Maher of Omaha, NE; Erik Robinson and wife Mackenzie of Elkhorn, NE; Jill Steffen and husband Dustin of Sioux Falls, SD; and Jamie Werges and husband Tim of Red Oak, IA; great grandchildren: Grayson, Brooks, Fletcher, Georgia, and Nile; brother: Lynn Adams of Red Oak, IA; sister: Roberta Burgus of Yuma, AZ; sister-in-law: Vineta McArdle of Red Oak, IA; brothers-in-law: Fred Maher and wife Linda of Council Bluffs, IA; Phil Maher and wife Carlene of Castle Rock, CO; and Ray Maher and wife Kay of Independence, MO; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends including her beloved cat, Mr. Gray.
