Birthplace: Stennett, Iowa Resided In: Stennett, Iowa Newell J. Laire, age 78, of Stennett, Iowa passed away suddenly Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at his residence in Stennett. Newell J. Laire was born September 30, 1926 on a farm west of Stennett, Iowa the son of Harry and Essie (Wilson) Laire. He graduated from Stennett High School in 1944 and entered the United States Army in 1945. He served in the 95th Infantry Division, Antiaircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons and the 5th Constabulary Motorcyclist Corps. Newell was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Margaret Abramson on November 15, 1953 in Glenwood, Iowa. They lived most of their married life in their current residence in Stennett, Iowa. Newell worked with heavy equipment for Leonard Nelson for 14 years and later worked for Eveready Battery Company retiring in 1991 after 22 years. He loved gardening, bird watching, hunting, playing cards, hunting mushrooms, and was very patriotic. Newell also enjoyed his time playing baseball on the Elliott Town Team in his younger years. Preceding him in death were his parents; grandchildren: Candy and Carly Laire; sister: Gloria Gilchrest; and brothers: Jerold, Mervin, and Loring Laire. Survivors include his wife: Margaret Laire of Stennett, Iowa; children: Nancy Raney and husband Larry of Winterset, Iowa; Marshall Laire and wife Heather of Des Moines, Iowa; and Mark Laire and wife Monnette of Cumming, Iowa; grandchildren: Michael McFarland of Winterset, Iowa; Jeremy McFarland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Makaela Laire and Aaleah Laire both of Des Moines, Iowa; and Kaylee Laire and Anna Laire both of Cumming, Iowa; step-grandchildren: Todd Raney and wife Kami of Lorimor, Iowa; Jamie Raney and wife Valerie of Oakland, Iowa; and Melissa Schieffer and husband Todd of Davenport, Iowa; sister: Awanda Woods of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 sisters-in-law: Barbara Hansen and husband Norman of Stennett, Iowa; and Alice Rife of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Michael Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Elliott, Iowa with military graveside rites provided by the Griswold American Legion Post. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Friday, April 8, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
