Birthplace: Hawthorne, CA Resided In: Rural Red Oak, IA Murray Ray Smith, age 72, of rural Red Oak and Elliott, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Murray was born October 2, 1944 in Hawthorne, California, the son of Raymond and Bernice (Crum) Smith. The family moved to Iowa in 1947 where Murray graduated from Elliott High School in 1962. Murray attended Clarinda Junior College where he graduated with an Associate Degree in Mechanical Technology. He moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Link-Belt Speeder before serving in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Upon his return from the war, Murray moved to California where he worked in the plumbing business until moving back to Iowa in 1970. He started farming and shelling corn with his dad. He was united in marriage to Connie Williams on March 14, 1971 in Red Oak, Iowa. Murray farmed in the Elliott area all of his life retiring in 2010. He also operated Ebert Corner Tree farm and worked in the carpentry business with Jim Parker. Murray was a good faithful servant to God and to his family. He was a long time member of the Central Church of Christ where he served as Trustee and Deacon. Murray had a great sense of community pride. He served as a Cub Master, Boy Scout Leader, American Legion member, NRA member, Elliott Business and Betterment Association member, Library Board Trustee, Montgomery County Board of Adjustment member, Rural Fire Association Trustee, and was a long time member of the Montgomery County Fair Board. Murray's passion was spending time with his family and farming. He loved to work with his hands tinkering in the shop or doing one of his woodworking projects. He loved model trains, yard work, traveling, museums, board games with the family and enjoying the many blessings that God had given him. Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife: Connie Smith of rural Red Oak, IA; children: Zachary Smith of Tempe, AZ and Sarah Lawson and husband Fola of Omaha, NE; grandchildren: BJ and Gavin; sisters: Sheryl Buroughs and husband Ron of Griswold, IA and Janis Ivie of Lawrenceville, GA; brothers-in-law: Mike Williams and wife Mary of Urbandale, IA and John Williams and wife Kathy of Thornton, CO; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Central Church of Christ. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
