Mildred Aileen "Milly" Connell, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Milly was born October 2, 1931 in Hawthorne, Iowa, the daughter of Stevens and Lenora "Alice" (Asman) Diehl. She graduated from Red Oak High School in the class of 1950. Milly was united in marriage to Homer "Edward" Connell on November 3, 1951, in Red Oak, Iowa. They were lifelong residents of Red Oak. In her younger years, Milly did housekeeping and ironing for area families. Then, over the years, she worked for Union Carbide, Thos. D. Murphy Co., Red Oak Greenhouse, Wilson Lumber, Parker Hannifin, and Places. She also did babysitting and was a caregiver for the elderly. Her hobbies included crafts, writing poetry, sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, gardening, canning, boating, camping, and music. She also found great joy in her grandchildren. Milly was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene and was currently attending Faith Community Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Ed Connell; son: Steve Connell; brothers: Wayne, Scott, Elwin, and Gilbert Diehl; and grandsons: Brandon Link and David Connell. Survivors include her daughters: Carmen Link of Red Oak and Susan Brown and husband Steve of Henderson, IA; grandchildren: Jason Connell and wife Becky of Red Oak; Shanda Husz and husband Ryan of Macedonia, IA; and Londa Straw and husband Richard of Red Oak; great grandchildren: Ryker Connell, Sydney Connell, Michael Husz, Nicholas Husz, Breanna Oliva, Christian Straw, and Dustin Straw; great great grandchildren: Sophia and Axton; sister: Carolyn Reubenking of Red Oak; nephews and nieces: Wendell Ossman and wife Deb of Henderson, IA; Connie McCormick and husband Joe of Red Oak; Cheryle Wall of Henderson, IA; and Rodney Diehl of Russellville, TN; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life funeral will be held 10:30 AM Monday, January 24, 2022, at the Faith Community Church. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, January 23, 2022, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Faith Community Church or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.
