Birthplace: Adams County, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA Merle Jentoft Freeman, age 94, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community. Merle was born September 24, 1920 in Adams County, Iowa the daughter of Raymond and Belle (Estes) Markus. She graduated from the Creston, Iowa High School and later received her teaching degree from Northwest Missouri State University. Merle continued her education to receive her Master's Degree from Omaha University. She was united in marriage to Myron Robert Jentoft in August of 1943 during WWII when Mike was an Electricians Mate in the Navy. They lived in Creston where Mike worked for Burlington Northern Railroad. They transferred him to Red Oak in 1947. Mike passed away on December 24, 1966. Merle taught physical education in Red Oak and later worked at the Glenwood State School. She was united in marriage to Arnold Freeman on November 6, 1986 in Red Oak, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 2004. Merle was an avid reader and loved gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; sisters: Marie Arnold, Elsie Foundry, Opal Markus, and Marian Simmons; brother: Earl Markus; and a grandson: Micah David Lewis. Survivors include her children: Michael R. Jentoft and wife Peggy of La Mirada, CA; Stephen K. Jentoft and wife Connie of Oklahoma City, OK; and Jaclyn T. Lewis of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren: Andrew Tunney and wife Tiffany of Council Bluffs, IA; Julianna Tunney of Des Moines, IA; Kirk Jentoft of Colorado; Sonja Jentoft of Texas; Jens Jentoft of Maryland; Jordan Jentoft of Oklahoma City, OK; and Mara Jentoft and Niki Jentoft of La Mirada, CA; great grandchildren: Laura, Tara, Benjamin, Natalie, and Erica Tunney of Council Bluffs, IA; brother: Raymond Markus of Council Bluffs, IA; step-children: Linda Erickson and husband Paul of Warrenville, IL and Janet Freeman of Atlantic, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday, January 2, 2015 at the First Covenant Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Covenant Church or the Diabetes Foundation. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
