Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Elliott, Iowa Max Petty, age 83, of Elliott, Iowa passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak after an extended illness. Max Leroy Petty was born on the family farm in Pilot Grove Township of Montgomery County, Iowa on November 25, 1919 the son of William Harrison and Ollie Pearl (Givan) Petty. He graduated from the Elliott High School in 1937. He served three years and six months during World War II in the Army, 81st Wildcat Division. His tour of duty included Hawaii, New Caledonia, Japan, and Peleliu. He was discharged from the Army as a Sergeant in the Medical Corps. He was united in marriage to Margene Mae Pierson on June 9, 1946 on the family farm near Elliott, Iowa. Max completed a two year on-the-farm training course at Elliott under the VA Program. Max and Margene farmed in Pilot Grove and Frankfort Townships in Montgomery County for 17 years. In 1964 they moved to and later purchased the 230 acre farm of Margene's great grandfather which is located in Waveland Township, west of Elliott, Iowa. They retired from farming in 1985 and moved into Elliott in 1987. Margene preceded Max in death on April 30, 1990. Max had served on the Waveland Township Election Board, Griswold Community School Board, and the Elliott Town Council. He was a former member of the Farm Bureau and a past 4-H Leader. Max was currently a member of the Griswold American Legion Post # 508 and the Elliott Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing-especially with his family on trips to Minnesota and playing cards in Elliott with friends. Max has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak since April of 2001. Max was preceded in death by his parents; wife; five brothers: Ross, Lloyd, Dean, Milo, and Vernon; and sister: Doris Weston. Survivors include his three sons: Steve Petty and his wife Susan of Clarinda, Iowa; John Petty and his wife Teresa of Elliott, Iowa; and Jack Petty and his wife Karen Albertson of Woodbury, Minnesota; 7 grandchildren: Christine Cerda of Corning, Iowa; Doug Petty and his wife Jessica of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Scott Petty and his wife Julie of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Ben Petty and his wife Marianne of Cummings, Georgia; and Connor, Erin, and Riley Petty, all of Woodbury, Minnesota; 4 great grandchildren: Domenica and Angelica Cerda; and Jonathan and Nathan Petty; sister: Mae Showalter and her husband Daryl of Kearney, Missouri; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, June 9, 2003 at the Elliott Church of Christ with the Rev. Kirk Dudley officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Sunday, June 8, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott First Responders or the Elliott Fire Department. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
