Obituary

Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Max Edward Bauer was born on March 10, 1921, in Montgomery County, the only child of Emil and Katherine Bauer. He passed away peacefully on Monday, October 19, 2009, at Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak at the age of 88 years. Max attended Wales-Lincoln School and graduated in 1938. He enlisted in the US Army on September 4, 1942, and was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945. He married Frances Arlene Lee on January 4, 1946, in Coronado, California. Max & Fran returned to Iowa and moved to the farm where he grew up. They raised two children, Gregory and Katherine. Max's lifelong enjoyment and work was farming. As a young boy, he helped his parents farm with horses. He could alarm his mother in particular by hitching a team by himself as a little kid. Max always embraced farming technology with equipment and livestock. Max was one of the first farmers in the area to erect blue Harvestore silos on his farms. He also purchased feeder cattle from a rancher in Wyoming and enjoyed traveling to their ranch to see how they lived and farmed. Their business ended in friendship, which was also typical of Max's character. A strong trait of his was helping others, whether it was a neighbor farming, a volunteer project or his family. Throughout his life, Max was involved in 4-H leadership, Farm Bureau, Farmers Mercantile Board, Red Oak Country Club, Masons and Stratton Methodist Church. Max enjoyed sports throughout his life. He participated in several sports, whether school or community teams. He avidly watched sports on TV and in adulthood participated in bowling and golf with a passion! Max and Fran traveled to Mesa, Arizona, in winter months. What started as a few weeks vacation ended in dividing their retirement between Red Oak and Mesa. Max could finally golf 12 months a year! And their friendships expanded, too, by bonding with many couples they met in AZ. Their retirement years held rituals of driving to AZ in the fall and back to IA in the spring. Kathie helped it continue by being the chauffer for many of those trips, ensuring safe travel and enjoying time spent together. Family memories were made by trips and Christmas celebrations in AZ. Preceding Max in death were his son Gregory in 1967; his mother, Katherine "Katie" in 1971; and his father, Emil in 1989. Max is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Bauer of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter: Kathie Bell and husband Jack of Red Oak, Iowa; grandsons: Jason Bell and wife Caydee and Tyler Bell; great grandchildren: Nicholas, Samuel & Olivia Bell all of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brothers-in-law: Don Lee and wife Charlotte of Emerson, Iowa and Frank Gitchell of Rockford, Illinois; sister-in-law: Ramona Baxter of Shenandoah, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Our extended family at Good Samaritan Center is also loved and appreciated. Max had many friends and relatives who enriched his life immeasurably.
