Obituary

Birthplace: Afton, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Mary E. Smith, age 87, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Mary Elizabeth Smith was born January 21, 1924 in Afton, Iowa the daughter of Roy and Frances (Howell) Eyberg. She graduated from the Arispe, Iowa High School in 1941 and attended Drake University. She graduated from Drake in 1943. Mary taught school for three years and worked for the Des Moines Library until she was united in marriage to Robert Smith on August 22, 1948 in Arispe, Iowa. They lived in Creston and Nodaway until Robert went into the ministry moving to Eddyville, Iowa. They served in Waterloo, Nashua, Lehigh, and West Bend, Iowa before retiring and moving to Red Oak, Iowa in 1992. Mary was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, was an avid bird watcher, enjoyed flowers and gardening, sewing, reading, and painting watercolors. Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers: Oliver and Gerald Eyberg. Survivors include her husband: Rev. Robert Smith of Red Oak, IA; children: David Smith and wife Cheryl of Omaha, NE; Gene Smith and wife Jeanine of Arlington, NE; Paul Smith and wife Kathy of Promise City, IA; Roy Smith and wife Tyra of Green Bay, WI; and Marianne Heyne and husband Lorn of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; 15 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother: Gene Eyberg and wife Kathleen of Atlantic, IA; many sisters-in-law; many brothers-in-law; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Nodaway, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
