Birthplace: Montgomery County, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA formerly Elliott Mary Helen Peterson, age 100, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Elliott, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Mary Helen was born August 24, 1918 in Pilot Grove Township of Montgomery County, Iowa, the daughter of L. Paul and Mabel (DeWitt) Lathrop. She attended Pilot Grove #8 country school, graduated from Red Oak High School in 1936, and received her Normal Training. Mary Helen taught for two years in Douglas Township and was united in marriage to Maurice Peterson on June 4, 1938 in Missouri Valley, Iowa. They farmed near Stratton and Elliott before moving to their current farm in 1953. Maurice passed away in 1959 and Mary Helen started to work for the Elliott School as a secretary and retired in 1985 from the Griswold School District. Over the years she was a member of the Stratton United Methodist Church, the Pilot Grove United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and was currently a member of the Elliott Church of Christ. Mary Helen was a member of the Federated Club, Pinochle Club, Old Neighbors Club, and a 74 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Preceding her in death were her husband: Maurice in 1959; daughter-in-law: Norma Peterson in 1995; son: Richard Peterson in 2000; daughter: Mary Anne Smith in 2007; sisters: Frances Carlson and Pauline Keener; and great grandson Jacob Shalters. Survivors include her son: Curtis Peterson and wife Janie of Red Oak, IA; son-in-law: Dennis Smith of Atlantic, IA; grandchildren: Kimberley Hanshaw and husband Brian of Villisca, IA; Dr. Rob Peterson and wife Lea Anne of Grant, IA; John Peterson of Villisca, IA; Nikki Sowers and husband Todd of Red Oak, IA; Scott Peterson and wife Beth of Elliott, IA; Mike Peterson and wife Shana of Kenesaw, NE; Curtis Jr. "Pete" Peterson of Elliott, IA; Carrie Shalters and husband Larry of Red Oak, IA; Amanda Devito of Red Oak, IA; Brian Smith and wife Amy of Bellevue, NE; Amy Schendel and husband Tom of Ankeny, IA; Cari Christian and husband Jake of Des Moines, IA; Matthew Smith and wife Jessica of Omaha, NE; and Alex Smith and wife Kristina of Omaha, NE; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister-in-law: Marilyn Limke of Des Moines, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Monday, December 17, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County History Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
