Birthplace: Stennett, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Mary A. Magneson, age 82, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center after an extended illness. Mary A. Magneson was born February 23, 1930 north of Stennett, Iowa the daughter of Kirk and Ethelyn (Harover) Samples. Mary attended school at North Grant School south of Red Oak and Ratliff School north of Red Oak before graduating from Red Oak High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Duane Magneson on February 19, 1950 in Stanton, Iowa. They farmed all of their married life in Southwest Iowa including the communities of Stanton, Elliott, Red Oak, and Essex. Mary and Duane moved into Red Oak in 2004 and Mary moved to the nursing home in 2009. She was a longtime member of the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church when they moved to town. She was a member of the Lutheran Church Women, was a Sunday school teacher, 4-H leader, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, playing Pinochle, and taking trips. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and attending family reunions. She dearly loved her family. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Willard Samples and wife Della; Earl Samples; and Elvin Samples and wife Ramona; and sister: Effa Anderson. Survivors include her husband: Duane Magneson of Red Oak, IA; son: Douglas Magneson of Belleville, IL; daughter: Kathryn Wetzel and husband Clay of Red Oak, IA; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brothers: Tom Samples and wife Dale of Seattle, WA and Kirk Samples, Jr. and wife Deloris of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law: Marian Samples of Omaha, NE; brothers-in-law: Merlin Anderson of Red Oak, IA; Keith Magneson and wife Twyla of Prairie Village, KS; and Lyle Magneson of Burlington, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A celebration of life service will be held 11 AM Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Iowa Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
