Birthplace: Strahan, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Mary M. "Bette" Bolton, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center. Mary Magdalene "Bette" Bolton was born September 8, 1923 in Strahan, Iowa the daughter of Marcus and Mary (Hambsch) Johnson. She was raised in Henderson, Iowa where she attended school. She was united in marriage to Edgar Sowers and to this union were born four sons: Laurence, Tom, Donald, and Richard. She later was united in marriage to Harvey Bolton. Bette lived in Henderson, Iowa until 1969 when she moved to Red Oak. She worked for the Union Carbide Battery Company for 36 years retiring in 1986. Bette enjoyed cooking, country music, her friends, but most of all her family and grandkids. Preceding her in death were her parents; 6 brothers: Fred, Frank, Paul, Phil, Edward, and Dale Johnson; and sister: Ruth Sublet. Survivors include her sons: Laurence Sowers and wife Annie of Queen Creek, Arizona; Tom Sowers of Red Oak, Iowa; Donald "Buck" Sowers and wife Renee of Oceanside, California; and Richard "Dewey" Sowers and wife Marsha of Emerson, Iowa; grandchildren: Troy Sowers and wife Sharla of Warrensburg, Missouri; Mashelle Medina and husband Alex of Gilbert, Arizona; Todd Sowers of Red Oak, Iowa; Shad Sowers and wife Laura of Emerson, Iowa; Shane Sowers and wife Kimberly of Red Oak, Iowa; Stacie Hamilton and husband Brad of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; and Mindy Straight and husband Andy of Queen Creek, Arizona; 13 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mel Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Farm Creek Cemetery at Henderson, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held 1 hour prior to the funeral service. A memorial fund is being established. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
