Birthplace: Waterloo, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Mary Benda, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away suddenly Tuesday, July 2, 2002 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Mary Benda was born December 13, 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Nicholas and Anastasia Fillos. She was raised in Waterloo and graduated from the Waterloo High School. She attended the University of Iowa where she received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing. Mary was united in marriage to Russell Benda on July 19, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa. They moved to Red Oak in 1950 where Mary worked for many years at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital retiring in the late 1980's. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, formerly a member of the Church Board, and was a former member of the Republican Women. Most recently Mary was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Russell Benda on March 20, 1990; and a sister: Katherine Lundesgaard. Survivors include her 2 sons: Russell "Benjie" Benda and his wife Martha of Des Moines, Iowa; and Mark Benda of Red Oak, Iowa; 4 daughters: Rebecca Benda of San Francisco, California; Deborah "Bobsy" Johnson and her husband Pete of Cherokee, Iowa; Margaret Caye and her husband Rich of Red Oak, Iowa; and Martha Pfeiffer and her husband Stan of Red Oak, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Christopher and Mark Johnson of Cherokee, Iowa; Alexandra and Olivia Schenck of Red Oak, Iowa; Jonathan Benda of Des Moines, Iowa; and Mary Pfeiffer of Red Oak, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Father James Kleffman officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8 PM Friday, July 5, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Recitation of the Rosary to be at 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary's Catholic Church or the "No One Denied" Program at the YMCA. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
