Obituary

Birthplace: Hamburg, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Margy Fern Rubey, age 96, of Red Oak, IA passed away, Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after living a long & abundantly full life. Margy F. Rubey was born August 18, 1920 in Hamburg, IA the daughter of Ernest L. & Harriet (Yates) Richards. Margy grew up on a farm near Sidney, IA learning firsthand about the farm family way of life. She also became a crack shot with a 22 rifle roaming the family timberland. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1938 with a teaching certificate. She taught at the country schools of Pleasant Grove & Hendricks, IA. Margy was united in marriage to Wade S. Rubey of Hamburg, IA on July 11, 1941 in a simple service in Savannah, MO. From that day on they continued on life's journey together "through thick & thin" for 65 years. Margy figured that eventually "the thick did outweigh the thin". She worked hard to keep the home fires burning while Wade served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 1942 until Oct. 1945. After the war, Margy & Wade moved to a farm South of Emerson, IA & son Clint was born in 1946. They then farmed near Elliot, IA & later moved to the homestead Northwest of Red Oak & then son Ron was born in 1950. Margy & Wade started their real estate & auction business in 1956. Rubey Realty is Montgomery County's oldest real estate firm which continues to serve all of Southwest IA. Rubey Auction started with the motto "no auction too small or too big". Margy often noted that some of those first auctions were "truly small". Rubey Livestock Auction was started in 1961. Clint joined the family firm in 1970 after returning from Vietnam. In 1971, Margy & Wade moved off the farm onto Eastern Avenue in Red Oak. Clint then took up residence on the home farm. Margy being a farm girl thru & thru did not take this move lightly but being of a practical & realistic nature knew people had to move with the times. So, she packed up her deep rooted farm family values moving them to town with the rest of the furniture. The Livestock Auction was sold in 1990. Margy cashiered her last household auction six years later at the age of 76. Rubey Realty & Rubey Auction Co. continued with Clint & his wife Julie eventually taking the reins continuing to build the business. For many years, Margy's tenacity, frugality & tireless efforts, often behind the scenes & un-applauded, helped to make the business work, securing a better future for not only Wade & herself but also for their children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Margy & Wade built their business upon a firm belief in honesty, hard work and treating people with friendship & respect. Characteristics passed on to & expanded upon by Clint & Julie to this day. Thru their son Ron, Margy & Wade were able to experience & enjoy a different way of life than their own. Ron worked in the field of dance & theatre in the U.S. & in Europe for 30+ years. Since 1994, he has worked in support of his registered partner Andreas' dual careers as an opera / concert singer & visual artist. Margy was a member of the Stratton United Methodist Church & Stratton United Methodist Women, one aspect of which was preparing & serving her share of fried chicken & homemade cherry pies at the Montgomery County Fair. She delivered Meals on Wheels for a time. She enjoyed doing ceramics. She liked birds. She tended garden leading to much canning, pickling & freezing. Like mom's everywhere she was a jack of all trades. She cooked, baked, cleaned, washed windows, did piles of laundry & ironing, sewed & mended, made costumes, oversaw many a school & 4-H project, mowed lawns, pulled weeds, painted & wallpapered, laid linoleum & carpet and was an all-round handywoman with pliers & a screw driver always at the ready. She was a chauffeur, a driving instructor and taught her sons how to pitch & catch a ball. She was an old fashioned child psychiatrist who could listen patiently & dole out sage advice sparingly. She was a nurse with a purse (which never ever left her side) full of band-aids & mercurochrome ready for any cut or scrape plus nerves of steel to meet head on any large scale medical emergency, all of which with rather active kids & grandkids were plentiful. At age 91, she had left shoulder replacement. The doctor asked her what she had done in her life to cause both of her rotator cuffs to totally deteriorate. She simply replied, "I guess I have pretty much been working most of my life." Above all, she was a wife, a mother, a grandmother & a great grandmother. Family was her primary focus, her pride, her joy. For 65 years, she and Wade scrimped & saved, laughed & cried, raised two sons, took chances, built a successful business, traveled, enjoyed immensely & took great pride in all their children, grandchildren & great grandchildren and loved life. After Wade passed away on February 13, 2006, Margy continued to have her family's back & always worried about her family more than herself. She was truly one of the women of The Greatest Generation, a poster woman for all that means. One of Margy & Wade's goals was to see that their children & grandchildren attended college. Mission accomplished. They also established a college fund for their great grandchildren. To paraphrase Frank Sinatra's famous song: she took her blows, she did not yield, she held her head up high, she triumphed as she met life head on & "she did it her way". She was Margy, one of a kind. She was loved & will be missed. Margy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wade, siblings Leonard, Clifford, Clark, Paul, Raymond & "Baby" Richards and Wanda Jensen. Survivors include two sons: Clint Rubey & wife Julie of Red Oak, IA and Ron Rubey & partner Andreas Jaeggi of Basel, Switzerland; two granddaughters: Lisa Stocksleger & husband Scott of Slater, IA and Kim Bond & husband Damien of Red Oak, IA; stepgranddaughter Kate Engel & husband Scott of Lincoln, NE; five great grandchildren: Wade & Ben Stocksleger of Slater, IA, Dawson, Brody & Nicole Bond of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law Barbara Richards of Emerson, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.
