Birthplace: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Margaret R. Bruce, age 94, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa. Margaret Roberta Bruce was born May 12, 1913 on a farm south of Red Oak the daughter of Isaac and Fannie (Roberts) Binns. She went to country school and attended Red Oak High School. She was very active in 4-H, attended the State Fair, and was chosen 2nd healthiest girl in Iowa. Margaret was united in marriage to Henry Bruce on January 23, 1933 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They farmed in West Township of Montgomery County and Margaret worked many years at the Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Company. She raised baby chicks for income and for food. She loved flowers and had beautiful flower beds. Margaret raised canaries and parakeets and Henry and Margaret had a collection of rare birds, some that were on the endangered list. Schools brought kids by the bus loads to the farm to see the birds. They also raised rabbits, pigmy goats and sitka deer. Margaret loved poetry, was a 4-H leader, was a member of the Happy Hour Club, and was a member of the West Township Neighborhood Club. She was also a longtime member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church where she was involved in Church Circle and helped with many dinners and Kids Clubs. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1985; two brothers: Wilferd and Bernard Binns; and sister: Gertrude Binns. Survivors include her son: Larry Bruce and wife Joan of Red Oak, Iowa; two daughters: Carolyn Ossian and husband Ronald of Lincoln, Nebraska and Sharon Smith and husband Perry of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Deb Bruce of Altoona, Iowa; Fred Bruce and wife Lori of Red Oak, Iowa; Diane Bruce of Bellevue, Nebraska; Cindy Akin and husband Ben of Granite Falls, Washington; Rhonda Ihrie and husband David of Lincoln, Nebraska; Pamela Zilly and husband Jim of Denton, Nebraska; Kelly Cave of Red Oak, Iowa; Kathy Palmquist and husband Mark of Red Oak, Iowa; and Kim Laughlin and husband Jim of Red Oak, Iowa; great grandchildren: Kari Palmquist, Lisa Palmquist, Andrew Palmquist, Jason Laughlin, Kristi Laughlin, Julie Laughlin, Lindsey Zilly, Christopher Zilly, Lucas Ihrie, Samuel Ihrie, Emily Kruse, Olivia Kruse, Haley Olesen, Ian Cave, Sara Bruce, Beth Bruce, Nataleah Akin, Samuel Akin, and Riley Akin; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, May 11, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Presbyterian Church or the Heartland Hospice. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
