Birthplace: Cherokee County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak formerly Madison, SD Lylah P. Rentz, age 94, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Madison, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Lylah P. Rentz was born May 31, 1914 in Grand Meadow Township of Cherokee County, Iowa. As a young girl she moved to rural Wentworth, South Dakota where she graduated high school. She also graduated with a teaching degree from Eastern South Dakota State Normal School on May 29, 1934. She taught in Robeck, Hare, and Schnell schools in the Wentworth School District during the mid nineteen thirties and the Colman School District in 1938. On August 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to Edwin T. "Pete" Rentz at Wentworth, South Dakota. While Pete served in WWII, Lylah lived in Sisseton, South Dakota working at the Pearson Rexall Drug Store. After the war, they moved to Madison, South Dakota where Pete was a building contractor. Pete preceded her in death on June 25, 1983. Lylah moved to Red Oak, Iowa in 1997 and to Good Samaritan Care Center in 2004. While in South Dakota she was an active member of the St. John's Lutheran Church and various church circles. She was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of 8 and 40 Salon #15. Her love of birds, nature, and gardening is a legacy to her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; four brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her daughter: Susan Johnson and husband Russell; grandchildren: Bryce Johnson and wife Jenny, Mark Johnson and wife Leanne, and Jordan Johnson and special friend, Jenn Batten; and great grandchildren; Kaden, Bennett, and Ellison Johnson and Lauren and Andrew Johnson all of Red Oak, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor George Hooper officiating. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Madison South Dakota at 1 PM on Friday, April 3, 2009. Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Care Center New Horizons. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
