Birthplace: Council Bluffs, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Lori Portz, age 44, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, February 21, 2003 at her home in Red Oak after an extended illness. Loretta N. "Lori" Portz was born November 5, 1958 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Janice (Hays) Stortenbecker. She was raised in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1977. Lori attended Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska and graduated in 1981 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in music education. She taught K-12 vocal music at Nishna Valley Community School for ten years. Lori was united in marriage to Michael Portz on December 28, 1990 in Red Oak, Iowa. She served as a fashion consultant for Doncaster and later as the Advertising Manager for the Red Oak Express. Most recently Lori was the Executive Director of the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as the Director of Music for nearly 20 years, PEO Chapter HB, Master Singers in Omaha, Nebraska, Two by Two, Red Oak Ambassadors, and Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives. She served for many years on the Red Oak Community Playhouse Board of Directors and was currently serving as its president. Lori is survived by her husband: Dr. Michael Portz of Red Oak, Iowa; parents: Henry and Janice Stortenbecker of Nebraska City, Nebraska; 3 brothers: Henry "Hank" Stortenbecker and his wife Linda of Seattle, Washington; Michael Stortenbecker and his wife Sue of Omaha, Nebraska; and Roger Stortenbecker and his wife Jan of Lincoln, Nebraska; 2 sisters: Susan Beaver and her husband Bob of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Marsha Biaggi and her husband Perry of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Mother-in-law: Gena Portz of Red Oak, Iowa; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, February 24, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nancy Schultz officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 6:30 PM Sunday, February 23, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church with visitation to be held from 7-9 PM also at the First United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Heritage Foundation/Lori Portz Memorial. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
