Obituary

Lois Rogene Shenefield Vanderpool, age 92, passed away December 16, 2023, at ACCURA Healthcare in Stanton, Iowa. Rogene was born April 2, 1931, in Silver City, Iowa. She was the oldest child of Charles and Erma (Rommel) Shenefield. She was raised on the family farm north of Malvern and later lived with her Grandmother Shenefield so she could attend Malvern High School. Rogene graduated with the class of 1949 and continued to communicate with her classmates and attend reunions over the years. She was proud of being the last survivor in a group of four best girl friends from the class. She was known to most everyone as Jeanie. Jeanie was always a willing helper but had time to read hundreds of books and articles and keep a journal summary of each one. She kept daily journals of her life including her travels with every penny spent along the way, everyone who came to visit, what she served for meals, and who was having a birthday. This continued for more than 60 years leaving treasured stories.

Following graduation, Jeanie married Maxie Vanderpool, February 14, 1950. They lived in Moxee and Grandview, Yakima Valley in Washington state and remained there for twenty-nine years. They worked in the fields and raised and harvested hops, grapes, and asparagus owning their own fields and working for other farmers. They were so proud to have a purchasing contract with Welch Cannery for their grapes. She began doing housekeeping and ironing for others which continued until she was 88 years old. Gardening, flowers and yard care remained Rogene's hobbies throughout the years. She loved making everything zucchini that she could keep in the freezer, share with the neighbors, and have for her visitors for coffee time. Jeanie was also known as the family historian keeping photo albums, addresses, cards and articles about her family and their friends.

Max and Rogene moved back to Iowa and made their home at Chariton in 1979. They wanted to be closer to their families: the Shenefields and the Vanderpools. Max passed away on December 9, 1981. Later Rogene moved to Glenwood, Iowa, where she shared a home with her brother Richard and lived near her sister Sharon.

Left to mourn her passing are her brothers: Charles Phillip Shenefield and Larry Dean Shenefield who live at Russell, Iowa and her sister Sharon Ann Marshall who lives at Glenwood, Iowa; nieces and nephews: Troy Shenefield, Steve (Brenda) Shenefield, and Debra Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Gerald and Richard.

Rogene has been cremated per her wishes and will be buried with the cremains of her husband. A family graveside burial will be at Malvern Iowa Cemetery with no public visitation or services.

Memorials can be directed to any local library or organization in Rogene's name.

Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel assisted the family with cremation services.
