Birthplace: Rural Red Oak, IA Resided In: Red Oak formerly Jefferson, IA Lois Jean Lawson was born on February 23, 1930 to Benjamin and Gladys (Wheeler) Dukeshier on the family farm just south of Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away on September 29, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Lois Jean grew up in the Red Oak area graduating from Coburg High School and later the Iowa State Teaching College in Cedar Falls. After 5 years of teaching in Greenfield and Stennett, Lois Jean married Bernard Bills of Red Oak. The couple made their home on the family farm just north of town where they had three sons. They later divorced and Lois Jean moved with her sons to Jefferson where she resumed her career as an elementary school teacher. While in Jefferson, Lois married Bill Lawson and continued teaching and raising her family. They later divorced. Besides her family and career, she was actively involved with the Jefferson Iowa Community Players, where she performed and assisted with many local productions. After her retirement, Lois Jean was active in many clubs and organizations and also volunteered at local nursing homes playing the piano and singing. Eventually Lois Jean returned to Red Oak to care for her aging mother. During that time, she authored three children's books and also helped to develop curriculum for children's learning. Lois Jean loved to travel and experience new people and places. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S. With her optimism, enthusiasm, and genuine concern and kindness for everyone, she affected the lives of many of her students and people she met throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Mark Cory Bills. Lois Jean is survived by her long time companion, Bill Rea of Red Oak, sons: Tracy (Linda) Bills of Jefferson, IA and Brian (Traci) Bills of Washington, UT, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many friends and relatives. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
