Birthplace: Cass County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, IA formerly Stanton, IA Lois Franzen, age 76, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly Stanton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center. Lois Jean Franzen was born September 22, 1934 in Cass County, Iowa the daughter of Louis and Margrette (Martin) Hartman. She graduated from Griswold High School in 1952 and was united in marriage to Swanie Franzen on December 19, 1954 in Lyman, Iowa. They lived for one year in Chicago before moving to rural Stanton, Iowa to start farming. They lived on the same farm from 1964 until 2005 when they moved to Red Oak. Lois was a longtime member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church, WELCA, the Friendly Study Club, and enjoyed playing cards especially Bridge. She was a member of the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed her time working in the Lemon Tree Gift Shop and serving at the information desk. In her early years she was very involved with 4-H. She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law: Mary and Erick Franzen; her husband: Swanie Franzen on August 14, 2009; brothers-in-law: Andy Chapman and Clair Coughlin; sister-in-law: Rosie Franzen; and a nephew: Scott Hartman. Survivors include her children: Cindy Hallquist and husband Kevin of Stanton, Iowa; Doug Franzen and wife Kathy of Stanton, Iowa; Carolyn Bashaw and husband Tom of Villisca, Iowa; Karen Crouse and husband Dan of Red Oak, Iowa; and Julie Stanley and husband Jim of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Nichole Hallquist of LaVista, Nebraska; Erin Hallquist and fiancé, Clint McFarland of Iowa City, Iowa; Michael Case and wife Sarah of Williamsburg, Virginia; Christina Case of Duluth, Georgia; Derek Ambrose and wife Kelly of Memphis, Missouri; Megan Lukes and husband Herb of Napierville, Illinois; Brittany Bashaw and special friend Josh Wiig of Red Oak, Iowa; Josh Bashaw of Villisca, Iowa; SueAnn Crouse, Michael Crouse, and Nicholas Crouse all of Red Oak, Iowa; and William and Adenia Stanley both of Red Oak, Iowa; great grandchildren: Logan Case, Austin Ambrose, and Alyzabeth Ambrose; sisters: Mary Coughlin of Elliott, Iowa and Ardell McCunn and husband Don of Massena, Iowa; brother: Alan Hartman and wife Judy of Cumberland, Iowa; sister-in-law: Mary Anna Chapman of Red Oak, Iowa; brother-in-law: Bernie Franzen and friend Nettie of Forest City, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa with Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Mamrelund Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society, or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
