Birthplace: Adams County, IA Resided In: Elliott, IA Leona F. Thompson, age 96, of Elliott, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa. Leona Frances Thompson was born May 25, 1914 in Adams County, Iowa the daughter of Simon and Annie (Ensign) Haley. She was raised in Adams County and graduated from the Villisca, Iowa High School in 1932. Leona was the only child in her family who worked her way through high school in order to be able to graduate. Leona was united in marriage to Clarence Thompson on June 17, 1933 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They lived in Pilot Grove Township before moving to Elliott in 1958. Leona worked at the Elliott Café before starting to work as a cook at the Elliott School. She retired in 1979 after 19 years of service. Leona had resided at the Griswold Care Center for the past two years. Over the years she was a member of several neighborhood clubs including the PDQ Club. Leona enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, canning, caring for her flowers, and reading. And she never forgot to send birthday cards. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: Clarence on July 9, 1991; brothers: Frank, Floyd, Paul, Cliff, Chester, Bill, Bob, and Tom; and sisters: Mary, Gladys, Nellie, and Ruby. Survivors include her children: Dick Thompson of Red Oak, Iowa; Peggy Van Buskirk and husband Max of Red Oak, Iowa; and Betty McConnell and husband Wes of Canton, South Dakota; 9 grandchildren: Debbie Rannals of Richmond, VA; Cindy Dittmer and husband Jerry of Muscatine, IA; Stanley Thompson and wife Nancy of Des Moines, IA; Lori Van Horn and husband Mark of St. Louis, MO; Jim Van Buskirk of Red Oak, IA; Sherry Powers and husband Drue of Red Oak, IA; Mark McConnell and wife Sharon of Sioux Falls, SD; Rex Van Buskirk and wife Gretchen of Overland Park, KS; and Marla Woessner and husband Terry of Tea, SD; 26 great grandchildren; sister-in-law: Marie Barr of Stanton, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. J. Keith Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott First Responders or the Heartland Home Health and Hospice. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
