June 21, 1931 – December 25, 2025
Leon Aloysius Volkmer, age 94, of Red Oak IA, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society. Leon was born June 21, 1931, at his home near Talmage, Nebraska, the son of Richard and Frances (Heng) Volkmer. He graduated from Talmage High School in Talmage, Nebraska, in 1949. He was a farm hand for several years before serving in the United States Marine Corps. Leon served on active duty from 1952 to 1954 and then the reserves until 1960 when he was honorably discharged. He married Edus G Dirks on June 3, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paul, NE.
Throughout the years, he farmed and worked at Safeway before starting a 36-year career with Earl May. Leon was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was member of Knights of Columbus. Leon was also a member of the American Legion, 57-year Life Member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge, and a member of Earl May’s President club. He received Earl May Manager of the Year four times.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife: Edus G Volkmer; parents: Richard and Frances Volkmer; brother: Sylvester “Sunny” Volkmer; sisters in law: Lois Volkmer and Wanda Lane; brothers in law: Dick Webber, Bruce Huber and John Dirks, and grandson Shawn O’Rourke.
Leon is survived by children: Dirk Volkmer and wife Queenie; Sherry O’Rourke-Page: siblings: Joan Huber, Alberta “Bert” Webber, Adrian “Steve” Volkmer and wife Lee; grandchildren: Elric Page and wife Angela; and great grandsons: Matthew O’Rourke and Michael Page.
The family of Leon A Volkmer wishes to extend their sincere thanks to all who have prayed and helped them through this time.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday, January 2, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 1510 N. Highland Avenue in Red Oak. Visitation with the family will begin at 9 AM with Rosary at 9:30 AM prior to Mass. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak Iowa.
